2019 FALL LEARN-TO-ROW & GREEN DAYS
RETURNING TEAMMATES — HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO GET OUT ON THE WATER EARLY!!
FRESHMEN & NOVICES — NO PRIOR ROWING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!!
Are you a returning Oakton rower and miss the Occoquan, or are you new to the sport and interested in giving rowing a try? Then join us for the Green Day Program (LTR/GD), offered every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 31st through November 2nd, at our Sandy Run facility on the Occoquan River.
Check the CALENDAR for a complete list of dates:
Wednesdays from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. | Fridays from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The Fall Learn-to-Row program is offered everyday between Sep. 2nd and 6th, at our Sandy Run facility on the Occoquan River.
Sep 2nd - 6th from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Fall rowing sessions are open to EVERYONE and will mix freshman and novices with returning varsity athletes.
The Learn-to-Row program is designed to introduce new rowers to the sport, from the proper way to hold an oar to porting a shell to actually going out and getting fast in a boat. Combined outings on the water ensure that freshman and novices get a feel for not only the water, but get to experience being part of our team.
The goal for Green Days for returning rowers is to get back to basics before we head to the hallways for Winter Conditioning and to ensure a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the rowing stroke. You'll also work with novices to help our team grow and thrive.
Attending even a couple of sessions will be helpful for novices to understand the nature (and inherent awesomeness) of Crew, and no prior rowing experience is necessary. Learn-to-Row is offered to students of all grades at OHS at no cost, although there is a small fee for new rowers to register with USRowing for the required 2019 liability waiver.
RETURNING ROWERS do not need to complete a new USRowing waiver until registration for Crew, or until your prior membership expires.
Participation in fall rowing is OPTIONAL for new and returning rowers. Participation is not required to have a great career as a new rower later in the season.
**Please note that for fall rowing, Oakton Crew does not provide transportation to and from the river. We encourage participants to carpool if possible, and you can sign up to be included on a carpool map when you register. Parents will be responsible for organizing their own carpools.
PASSWORD FOR CARPOOL can be requested from Membership@oaktoncrew.com
PLEASE HAVE ALL YOUR FORMS TURNED IN & REGISTER BEFORE YOU GO TO THE RIVER!!
HOW TO REGISTER:
STEP ONE: ALL PARTICIPANTS (New & Returning) MUST REGISTER FOR FALL ROWING & HAVE ALL FORMS TURNED IN BEFORE HEADING TO THE RIVER ON YOUR FIRST DAY!
COMPLETE THE ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM HERE.
STEP TWO: ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST COMPLETE THE THREE (3) FORMS BELOW (New & Returning)
Mail the Emergency Care and Communicable Disease Forms to: VP Membership OCCBC, P.O. Box 3206, Oakton, VA 22124, or you can place the completed forms in the Oakton Crew Mailbox in the Activities Office at OHS, ROOM 173.
BRING YOUR COMPLETED PHYSICAL to the Activities Office at OHS, ROOM 173, and turn it in to the office staff — you cannot mail this to Crew or hand it to a coach, and please do NOT leave the physical in the Crew OHS mailbox. Any rower who does not have a completed physical filed with the Activities Office staff will not be allowed in the Boathouse or on the water. Please check with your doctor's office for completion requirements.
**If you already have a VHSL physical on file for the 2019-20 school year for another sport or activity, you do not need to file a second copy.
STEP THREE: NEW ROWERS: Complete the 2019 USRowing Waiver
Go to the USRowing Membership Portal and select "Individuals/Join."
Enter club name: "Oakton High School" and club code: "AASHJ"
Enroll in Basic Membership (fee = $9.75) and sign the waiver for 2019. You do not need to send OCCBC a certificate for this step — confirmation will be sent directly to Oakton Crew by USRowing.
STEP FOUR: NEW ROWERS: Complete a Swim Test:
A swim test is required for all new rowers to participate in Learn-to-Row, or to join Crew in the spring. We will be conducting a FREE group swim test at Oak Marr Rec Center on Friday, August 30th (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM). You do not need to sign up in advance, and any questions can be directed to Mona Jarrah: email@example.com.
PLEASE REVIEW THE GUIDELINES BEFORE YOU ARRIVE - you must take the swim test wearing clothing over your bathing suit, no exceptions. Bring a set of dry clothes to change into after your test, or you'll have a wet ride home...
If you missed group testing on the 30th, you can independently arrange a swim test with a certified lifeguard by calling your local pool or YMCA to schedule. You may need to make arrangements to bring a life jacket if the facility you select does not have one available. There may be a charge for oversight of the test, depending on the facility. Upon completion, please have the lifeguard sign off on Oakton Crew's Swim Test Certificate and then return it to OCCBC at P.O. Box 3206, Oakton, VA 22124, or drop it in our Activities Office mailbox. If you need to borrow a life jacket for the test, please contact us.
If you cannot find a lifeguard who will certify your test, please send an email to: President@oaktoncrew.com
STEP FIVE: Each rower and parent MUST do the following:
Print the last page (Pg 48)
A Parent and the Student must Sign
Return the signed form to the Athletics Activities Office with the Physical Form
After that you're all set, and we're looking forward to seeing you on the river! Once you complete the Emergency and Communicable disease forms, and turn in your VHSL physical, you will not need to complete those steps again to register for Crew later this fall. (USRowing waivers will need to be updated upon membership expiration).
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO THE RIVER?
For Fall Rowing, rowers should wear appropriate work-out clothing, including sneakers AND SOCKS, shorts and a t-shirt, and should consider layering for warmth (the river can get breezy in the fall). Leggings, sweatshirts, and a windbreaker can help if the weather forecast is brisk.
YOU SHOULD ALSO BRING:
☐ FULL WATERBOTTLE
☐ HAT & SUNGLASSES
☐ HAND TOWEL
We row in light winds or moderate rain, but in the event of severe weather (lightning, high winds, heavy downpours) LTR/GD will be cancelled for the day. Please check our Twitter feed @oaktoncrew for updates if the weather is bad, or you can email the coaches at coaches@oaktoncrewcom, or our membership coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions. Don't follow us on Twitter? Our feed is detailed here.
By registering for Oakton Crew Fall Rowing, parents and students agree that photos and videos of their likeness may be used by the Club to highlight our activities and to promote our team. You may opt out of this agreement by submitting a written Photo Opt-Out Form.
