Crew will get you stronger than you have ever been in your life. It is the ultimate full-body sport that builds unmatched power, endurance, and mental toughness.

ZERO EXPERIENCE NEEDED

The Oakton Crew program provides elite opportunities to become a Division 1 collegiate athlete. Our rowers are highly recruited by the nation's top universities.

CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE FROM YEAR ONE

Everyone races regardless of experience. Pit yourself against local Virginia rivals and also the top high school crews in the nation. Oakton has produced champions at all levels.

COXSWAINS NEEDED TOO!

Coxswains are vital to making crews go fast and stay in sync. Our boats need leaders who steer, coach, strategize and have strong vocal chords. If you are a natural leader, we want you!

DIVISION 1 PATHWAY

Crew provides amazing opportunities to become a collegiate athlete. Rowers are recruited by the nation's top universities and are four times more likely to be recruited and receive athletic scholarships than athletes in any other sport.

A SPORT OF LEGENDS

Join one of the oldest sports in history. From historic races on the Thames to modern championships around the world, you become part of an amazing athletic legacy.

UNDERSTANDING CREW

The sport in 60 seconds

Rowing is a racing sport in which teams of athletes propel a long, narrow shell across the water using oars. Races are held on flat water courses, typically 1,500 to 2,000 meters long, with multiple boats racing side by side. The first boat to cross the finish line wins. Simple in concept. Extraordinary in execution.

Shells come in several configurations: the eight (8 athletes plus a coxswain who steers and calls strategy), the four, and the pair, among others. Every seat in the boat matters equally. There is nowhere to hide and no way to win alone — which is exactly what makes the sport so compelling for the kind of athlete who takes their role seriously.

A Sport Built on Pure Athletics

Unlike sports that require years of position-specific skill development, rowing rewards fundamental athleticism: power, endurance, coordination, and mental toughness. Height and wingspan are genuine advantages. So is the ability to push yourself past what you thought your limit was, and then do it again.

Many of the best collegiate rowers were recruited from other sports — swimmers, volleyball players, track athletes, basketball players — precisely because the physical tools transfer directly. College coaches actively recruit high school athletes with no rowing background. What we look for: raw potential and the hunger to develop it.

The History of the Sport

Rowing is one of the oldest competitive sports in the world, with organized racing dating to the early 19th century. It has been part of every modern Olympic Games since 1896. In the United States, collegiate crew has a history stretching back over 150 years — the Harvard-Yale regatta, first held in 1852, is the oldest intercollegiate athletic competition in the country.

In Virginia, scholastic rowing has grown dramatically over the past three decades. VASRA now includes dozens of high school programs competing at local, state, and national levels, with the Occoquan Reservoir serving as one of the premier scholastic rowing venues on the East Coast.

FAQS FOR FAMILIES

DOES MY STUDENT NEED PRIOR ROWING EXPERIENCE?

No. The majority of Oakton Crew athletes have never rowed before joining the team. Our fall Learn-to-Row program and winter conditioning are specifically designed to build athletes from the ground up.

WHAT ARE THE SWIMMING REQUIREMENTS FOR ROWING?

Safety is our priority. Every student must pass a basic swim test before they can go out on the water. This usually involves swimming a short distance and treading water for a few minutes.

HOW DO PRACTICES WORK WITH THE ACADEMIC LOAD AT OAKTON?

Many of our athletes are high achievers. While crew is a commitment, it teaches excellent time management. Many students find they actually perform better in school when they have a structured athletic schedule.

WHAT GEAR OR EQUIPMENT DO WE NEED TO PURCHASE?

The team provides the boats and oars. Families typically purchase the uniform for competition and basic athletic wear suitable for the weather. We will provide a specific gear list before the season starts.

ARE THERE TRYOUTS OR IS IT A NO-CUT SPORT?

Oakton Crew is a inclusive program. While we value competition and placement in boats is based on performance, we strive to find a place for every student who is committed to the training and the team.

CAN MY STUDENT PARTICIPATE IN OTHER ACTIVITIES?

During the main spring season, crew requires a daily commitment, making other sports difficult. However, many of our rowers participate in different activities during the fall and winter months.

HOW DO STUDENTS GET TO THE RIVER FOR PRACTICE?

Practice takes place at Sandy Run Regional Park. Families usually organize carpools from Oakton High School to the river. Coordination between parents is a major part of our community spirit.

WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF PARENT INVOLVEMENT?

Oakton Crew is powered by our families! From helping with regatta food tents to volunteering for board positions or fundraising, there are many rewarding ways for parents to stay involved.

IS ROWING A SAFE SPORT?

Yes. Our coaches are safety-certified, and we follow strict guidelines regarding weather and water conditions. Safety launches always accompany our shells during practice on the water.

HOW DO WE OFFICIALLY JOIN THE TEAM?

The first step is to register by filling out our interest form below. We hold information sessions in the fall and winter, followed by formal registration and swim tests before the on-water seasons begin.
