PRACTICE LOCATION

  • OHS on-the-water crew practices are conducted at Sandy Run Park. Sandy Run is a Northern Virginia Regional Park (NVRP) on the Occoquan River and is a dedicated rowing facility.
  • Address: 10450 Van Thompson Rd., Fairfax Station, 22039

  • The OHS Crew Team is located in Boat House 2
  • Speed limits within the park are STRICTLY ENFORCED. Park personnel often monitor speed with a radar gun. PLEASE obey the speed limits for the safety of the rowers.
  • There are designated parking areas for rowers which are in a different location than parking for parents.
  • There is a drop-off and pick-up area down close to the boat house area (last parking lot on the right).
  • PLEASE OBEY PARKING AND SPEED RESTRICTION INSIDE THE PARK. The club gets fined for parking and speed infractions!

PRACTICE SCHEDULE

  • The first practice at Sandy Run will be on MONDAY, March 1, 2010.
  • The current plan is to hold practice at 4:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday practices March 13 and 20th 12-2:30pm.
  • NO PRACTICE DAYS: TUESDAY- NOVICE MEN, WEDNESDAY - NOVICE WOMEN
  • We may elect to finish 15 to 30 minutes early the first few weeks because of Daylight Savings Time. Please monitor email, the coaching staff, and the OHS crew web site for up-to-date schedule information.
  • The new (novice) rowers will have Land Practice and boathouse orientation at Sandy Run on Friday, February 26th.4-6pm Please see Coach Tom Bennett for more details.

CAR POOLS

  • Many rowers elect to car pool to Sandy Run.
  • Sandy Run is approximately 15 miles from Oakton HS.
  • Many car pools already exist from winter conditioning.
  • If you would like to be in a car pool and are not already in one, email Logistics and provide the following information:
    • Name of Rower(s) needing car pool
    • Number of rowers you can transport in your vehicle including your own rower
    • Indicate whether a parent or a rower (student) will be the driver
    • Indicate whether a student driver is acceptable to transport your rower
  • If you are already in a car pool – please send an email to Logistics indicating who is in that car pool and if you would like additional rowers.
  • We facilitate car pools by grouping together rowers/parents that live near each other. We leave the detailed scheduling (what days/times each person drives) to the drivers in each car pool.

CLUB STANDING: Requirements for Rowers to Participate in On the Water Practices

  • Participation in on the water practices requires a rower to be in good standing with the Oakton Crew Club.
  • All rowers should have received an email from Ms. Shafer Dobry in February 2010 indicating your status relative to forms, service hours and fundraising.

Club standing includes the following:

  • Forms: All forms that were due Nov 1, 2009 listed on the Oakton Crew web site need to be completed prior to getting in a boat.
  • Service Hours:
    • All returning rowers must have 5 hours of service completed prior to getting in a boat.
    • All new (novice) rowers must have 4 hours of service completed prior to getting in a boat.
  • Swim Test: A swim test must be completed for all new (novice) rowers prior to getting in a boat. The completion certificate must be submitted to Ms. Shafer Dobry. 
  • Dues: Rowers dues for 2010 must be paid in full prior to getting in a boat.
  • The final check of all paperwork for each rower were due by Friday, January 15 2010 – All of the above requirements must be satisfied by that time in order to be able to participate in on-the-water practices at Sandy Run.

What to bring to Practice

  • The first few weeks of practice can be quite cold out on the water. Please make sure rowers are dressed properly including hats, long sleeve undershirts, sweatshirts, sweat pants, and a waterproof jacket.
  • ALWAYS bring a complete change of clothes including additional footwear. Although rare, rowers can sometimes end up in the water. YOU MUST have a change of clothes at every practice.
  • ALWAYS bring drinking water – the club does NOT provide water for the rowers. Rowers can dehydrate in cold weather. DRINK WATER
