Local Rowing Programs
- Northern Virginia Rowing
Club
The Northern
Virginia Rowing Club is providing an opportunity for experienced
high school rowers (both boys and girls) with at least one year of
experience required (two preferred) to row in eights, fours and maybe
even an octuple a few times. Register to join us for a fall rowing
program, at the Sandy Run Rowing facility on the Occoquan, dedicated to
improving skills, getting in lots of miles, and competing in some of the
local head races. There also may be an opportunity for 1 select girls
and 1 select boys boat to row in the Head of the Charles (depends on
getting an entry accepted - additional costs and practices will be
required for those interested). The program will run from Wednesday 8
September 2010 to Sunday 7 November 2010. Practices will be held four
days a week: Monday, Wednesdays and Thursday from 4:30 to 6:45 pm and
Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm at the Sandy Run Rowi ng Facility on
the Occoquan River. Early registrants get preference in the event the
program fills up.Registration for the program is now open at: Ronin

- Occoquan Juniors Rowing
Center
Occoquan Juniors Rowing
Center (formerly Fairfax County Sculling and Rowing) offers Summer
and Fall Programs. Learn to Row and Experienced rower summer development
and fall competitive programs are held at Sandy Run Park.
- Old Dominion Boat Club
Old
Dominion Boat Club is proud to announce plans and schedules for the 2010
Summer Select program. Registration for the program will be on Saturday,
June 5th at the Dee Campbell Rowing Center in Alexandria, VA (1 Madison
Street, Alexandria, VA 22314) from 9am to noon. The first day of
practice will be Monday, June 7th at 4pm. The men's and women's
teams will each take 16 rowers and 3-4 coxswains, unless there is an
overwhelming need to keep a third boat on either side of the program. If
cuts are necessary, tryouts will be during the first week of
practices. Until the majority of schools are done for the year,
practices will be held at the Dee Campbell Rowing Center at 4pm each
afternoon, with the potential for Saturday practices when the team is
not racing. Once school is out for the summer, morning practices will
also be included in the schedule, with actual days and times to be
announced once the teams are set.
The racing schedule is very
intense, as the team competes in four regattas over the course of six
weeks.
-
- 6/20 - Charm City Sprints (Baltimore)
- 7/2-7/4 - Independence Day (Philadelphia)
- 7/10 - Capital Sprints (Anacostia)
- 7/14-7/18 - Club Nationals (Oak Ridge, TN)
The team
will race in both 8's and 4's, giving each rower a chance to race
multiple times at each regatta. Travel and accomodations for the
multi-day regattas will be discussed once teams are set. Both the
men's and women's programs will train in 8's and 4's throughout the
course of the season. When the water/weather makes rowing impossible,
the Dee Campbell Rowing Center is a state-of-the-art facility, with a
fleet of ergs and nearly a ton of weight-lifting equipment. The goal
during practices is to prepare each rower and coxswain for racing at a
high level, while the overall goal for the entire program is to send
each rower and coxswain back to their high school team as superior
athletes. The average rower in last summer's program took five seconds
off of their 2k PR during the six week season.
The men's head
coach is Chris Cabrera from St John's College High School. The women's
head coach is Nick Johnson from Bishop O'Connell High School.
Any questions, comments or concerns for either coach, and to
obtain more information about registration, send an email to odbc_select@yahoo.com

- Sandy Run
Scullers
Sandy Run Scullers (SRS) is a small, private
rowing club located on the Occoquan that provides training and
recreational sculling opportunities for adult and youth rowers. SRS is
also the major sponsor for the Inter-Scholastic Sculling Association,
which provides competitive sculling events for high school aged rowers.
Sandy Run Scullers Summer Program for Juniors is coached by Lloyd
Martin and begins on Monday, June 21st through Wednesday, July
28th. Participants must be high school age (9th - 12th grade). Class
size is limited to 16 participants (8 novice slots; 8 experienced
slots). The Juniors sculling course is not a competitive sculling
program. It is intended for students who want to learn how to scull, or
who wish to hone/refine their sculling skills if they already have some
experience. The course will be conducted in 12 separate sessions,
scheduled two evenings per week for six weeks. Individual sessions
will take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6:00 - 8:30 pm (or
sunset, whichever comes first), at the Sandy Run Rowing facility at
Boathouse #2 (middle boathouse). SRS will supply all the equipment. Cost
per rower is $220.00, payable to Sandy Run Scullers.
After successfully completing this course of instruction, you will be
proficient in basic sculling techniques and be able to row in quads.
Note: The instructional techniques employed in this course are
cumulative, which means that each successive session builds on the
previous one. You should be able to commit to these sessions to benefit
fully from the program.
To ensure quality instruction and safety
afloat, the program is limited to 16 youth rowers. If you are interested
and ready to commit, please respond directly to Dana LaFever, SRS
Membership Director, to register and guarantee a spot. E-mail address is
dlafever AT hers DOT com. My telephone number is: (703) 609-3479. First
come, first served is the rule. There will be a wait-list, if needed.
- Lake Ridge Community
Rowing
Lake Ridge Community Rowing is hosting a
Jrs competitive sculling camp this summer. Rowers interested in signing
up for the camp, camp information and forms can be found at
http://lrcrc.webs.com/. We will be accepting registration packets at the
Oxford boathouse at Lake Ridge Park Saturday June 19th from 1-2:30 pm.
Practice starts on 21 June or the first day the rower can attend since
Fairfax schools get out later next week.
- Thompson Boat
Center
Thompson Boat
Center in Georgetown offers summer and fall competitive programs.
- Summer Juniors Mens
Program at Thomson Boat Center
- Schedule: The summer program begins at 4:30 PM on
Monday, June 7. Morning practices, as described below, will begin
after the end of the school year.
Morning Practices 3x per week
from 5:45 - 7:30 after school ends for the summer. Exact days will be
somewhat flexible based on rowers schedules. Not everyone will come to
the same morning practices - some will be for specific groups or
boats. Afternoon Practices will run from 4:30 - 6:30 PM every
afternoon. After school ends, based on rower schedules, the start time
will probably be moved to 4:00 PM. Saturday practices will run from 7
- 10 AM.
- Mission: The goal of the 2010 summer junior
program is to prepare its participants to succeed in the next level of
the sport, whatever that might be for them. For athletes preparing for
college, we work to give them a sense for collegiate-level coaching,
workload and expectations. For younger athletes, we work to send them
back to their home programs with a set of boat-moving skills that will
allow them to compete at a higher level, both internally in their own
programs, and against other high school teams in the spring.
- Program Structure: The summer junior program
makes extensive use of small boats in its training program. Rowers who
are proficient enough to handle pairs will use them regularly, and all
athletes will row fours extensively. Currently, the summer program
does not make significant use of sculling boats. After school lets out
for the summer, the program will run through two cycles of
high-intensity workouts followed by several days of recovery time in
preparation for USRowing Nationals. Significant attention is paid to
teaching recovery methods, including stretching, healthy diet, post
practice icing, and post-practice recovery nutrition.
- Selection, Travel and Racing: There is no cut for
the summer program. Everyone who comes out is welcome, though rowers
who at at a technical or fitness level significantly under that of the
team at large may be transferred into the Junior developmental
program. Athletes who train with the Thompson Boat Center may race
with the travel team of TBC Racing. Selection is based almost entirely
on seatracing and time trialing - the team may erg if weather does not
permit rowing on some days, but the individuals who make boats will be
those who have proved their ability to move those boats on the water.
Athletes who do not turn 17 in this calendar year may also be
considered for the Junior-16 boats, though anyone who can make the
varsity boat for the program will be given an opportunity to compete
for a seat in that boat. The racing team will take as many boats to
USRowing Nationals as are considered to be competitive. The most
probable plan is to take two Junior-18 eights and one Junior-16 8,
though if there is a third J-18 or second J-16 boat which is up to the
competitive standard, they will be allowed to travel as well. For the
Canadian Henley regatta, the standards are again raised; the program
will travel with one J-18 8 and one J-16 8, as well as any second
boats that made the USRowing Nationals final in their events. Dates
for USRowing nationals are: July 13-18 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee Dates
for the Royal Canadian Henley are: August 2-8 in St. Catharines,
Ontario
