This is the main fund raiser for Oakton Crew. Our letter writing
campaign is one of the most successful fund raising activities for our
team. It also requires only a very small amount of effort. The most
difficult work has been completed. FAQS
- What is this? What do I have to do?This is one of
our best fund raising and service hour activities. Download the Instructions before you start.
- What should be included in the Letter? A Letter
template can be downloaded here Letter Template (MS Word)
to get you started.
- How many do I need to write? For the 2011-12 Season,
each rower is REQUIRED to complete 10 letters.
- Who should I mail the letters
to? People you feel will be willing to support you for example,
relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers of your parents, dentist,
doctors, etc?
- Should I stamp the
letters? This is not required but it would be greatly
appreciated if you could provide stamps for the letters and pre-labeled
return envelopes. Every little bit of money saved helps the OCCBC.
- When are the letters/Letter record sheets
due? 10 Letters are to be completed and submitted your desired Tag Day household sponsor: Oct 22nd, Nov 12th and/or Dec 3 2011.
This year Oakton Crew is expanding our traditional Erg-a-Thon fundraiser to 3 events leading up to the start of Winter Conditioning.
The 2011 Erg-a-thon is meant to raise funds for Oakton Crew and get rowers ready for Winter Conditioning.
- September 17th 9am-12pm – Erg-a-Thon via pledges – Rowers solicit monetary pledges from family and friends for distance rowed. Download this Pledge Sheet and collect pledges from family and neighbors for accomplishing a specific erg distance or time. Here are some examples of pledges to collect:
- "$25 if you can beat last season’s 2K erg time by 5%"
- "$100 if you erg a 2K PR"
- "$20 if you erg a 10K"
- "$1 for every 2000 meters erg-ed"
Rowers fulfill their erg obligations at several public locations, where Oakton Crew will also be accepting public donations. This erg-a-thon will be held a the Reston YMCA(Google Map)Send reminders to people that pledged that you accomplished your goal
- October 29 (*Tentative -Pending Approval*) – Oakton Crew vs. Fairfax Crew Erg Team competition at the Fairfax Towne Center(Map). Both teams accepting donations as rowers from both schools erg head-to-head in a team scoring competition. More to come…
- Mid November – Oakton Crew supports Coach Becker as he ergs for 100,000 meters. Oakton Rowers keep Coach Becker motivated on a companion erg as he ergs an Ultra-Distance Piece…see Concept2 Marathon Rowing (this is not a fundraising event but a training event). See the Concept2 website for more information.
On-Line (Free Money) Fund raising Programs

eScrip – A rebate program tied to registered purchases. A user account must be created to link your loyalty card or eScrip on-line purchases to Oakton Cougar Crew Booster Club. Rebates/Refunds from purchases are credited to the entire Oakton Crew organization due to the inability to track and credit individual purchases.
- REGISTRATION: For new accounts, there is a 6-Step registration process where you must provide basic biographic information, your loyalty card number(s) and benefactor group name.
Navigate to your web browser to eScrip and search by one of the following in Step 1:
- Group Name: Oakton Cougar Crew Booster Club
- Group ID: 500024298
From there, Steps 2-6 will require you to enter information so eScrip can credit your purchases to Oakton Crew (or share the rebates with other groups close to your heart).
- HOW TO USE: Simple, Shop at Safeway and renew your loyalty cards each year with eScrip. For us here in Virginia, the only grocery store participating is Safeway. This is a great program for out-of-town relatives that may shop at Safeway or one of the grocery stores listed.
- Safeway Rebate Schedule:
1% on purchases up to $400
2% on purchases between $401-$600
3% on purchases over $600 - SPECIAL OFFERS: From August 11 – Sept 14, eScrip will be giving 10% back on specially marked items (labeled 10% Goes Back to Schools) at Safeway (and other grocery stores).

GLScrip – (Great Lakes Scrip) is a rebate program based upon purchases of gift cards. Each gift card provides a percentage back to the organization. These cards come in a variety of denominations and a variety of rebate percentages. Orders are place via the Shop With Scrip website (www.shopwithscrip.com) and require a secure on-line user account to track orders and rebates for the individual rowers.

Amazon.com – Last season Oakton Crew Amazon.com is a program Oakton Crew and is very easy to use. This program gives Oakton Crew rebates on purchases made from Amazon.com and their Third Party merchants.
- HOW TO USE: The only requirement is to enter the Amazon.com portal by clicking the Amazon.com icons located throughout this website. The icons are on the left-hand gold column of various pages. Entering through these icons lets the Amazon Associates program track the purchases and Oakton Crew can receive a rebate check. Rebates for this program are credited to the general team and not individual rower accounts.
- HOW TO MAXIMIZE REBATES: Use Amazon.com for your Internet shopping, not just books. Amazon.com is great for holiday shopping, Oakton Crew highest earnings month so far was December 2009. Also, Amazon.com is offering a 15% rebate on shoes purchased via the website partner Endless.com, this website would be great for replacing a pair of shoes you already own.
